Abdominal ultrasound allows us to assess the condition of the soft tissues and internal organs in the abdomen. This quick and reliable examination enables the early detection of changes in the liver, gallbladder, kidneys, spleen and other abdominal organs. Its results help in choosing the most appropriate further method of diagnosis or treatment.

Abdominal ultrasound is a completely non-invasive examination that allows us to identify the causes of pain and to monitor the progression of disease and the effects of treatment.

An abdominal ultrasound examination is most often chosen in cases of:

  • abdominal pain,
  • suspected gallstones or kidney stones,
  • pain in the lumbar region,
  • nausea, digestive problems, bloating,
  • abdominal enlargement or unexplained weight loss,
  • monitoring of chronic conditions,
  • preventive purposes, especially after the age of 40.

The abdominal organs and blood vessels we examine, assessing their size, structure and position:

  • the liver with the large hepatic vessels
  • gallbladder and bile ducts
  • pancreas
  • spleen
  • kidneys
  • adrenal gland
  • urinary tract
  • prostate
  • lymph nodes
  • the aorta, the vena cava and the femoral veins

How the examination proceeds and what it can detect

The abdominal ultrasound is performed with the patient lying on their back and on their side, and occasionally standing. The doctor applies gel to the probe and to the patient’s abdomen, which helps the probe glide more easily over the skin and creates better contact for the transmission of ultrasound waves, and thus a higher-quality image.

The examination can detect stones in the gallbladder and kidneys, inflammation of the abdominal organs, disorders in the function of the liver or spleen, and tumorous changes.

Special preparation for the examination

No special measures are required other than the following:

The patient must not eat for 6 to 8 hours before the examination but may drink water and unsweetened tea. One hour before the examination, they should drink 0.5 litres of water or unsweetened tea and hold their urine, as they need to have a full bladder for the examination.

We recommend that on the day before the examination the patient takes SAB simplex, at 2 tablets three times a day, or Espumisan, likewise three times a day. Both products are available over the counter at pharmacies; follow the enclosed instructions when using them.
